Surah Al-Munafiqun (“The Hypocrites”) is the 63rd surah of the Quran: a Madinan surah of 11 ayahs.
Background
Revealed in Madinah after ‘Abdullah ibn Ubayy, leader of the hypocrites, said on an expedition that “the honourable will expel the lowly” from Madinah (8).
Main themes
- Their oaths are a shield; their outward look is impressive (1–4)
- Honour belongs to Allah, His Messenger and the believers (8)
- Do not let wealth and children divert you from remembering Allah (9)
- Spend before death comes and one asks for a little delay (10–11)
The opening ayahs
إِذَا جَآءَكَ ٱلْمُنَٰفِقُونَ قَالُوا۟ نَشْهَدُ إِنَّكَ لَرَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ إِنَّكَ لَرَسُولُهُۥ وَٱللَّهُ يَشْهَدُ إِنَّ ٱلْمُنَٰفِقِينَ لَكَٰذِبُونَ ١
When the hypocrites come to you, [O Muhammad], they say, "We testify that you are the Messenger of Allah." And Allah knows that you are His Messenger, and Allah testifies that the hypocrites are liars.
ٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟ أَيْمَٰنَهُمْ جُنَّةًۭ فَصَدُّوا۟ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ سَآءَ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ ٢
They have taken their oaths as a cover, so they averted [people] from the way of Allah. Indeed, it was evil that they were doing.
ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ ءَامَنُوا۟ ثُمَّ كَفَرُوا۟ فَطُبِعَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يَفْقَهُونَ ٣
That is because they believed, and then they disbelieved; so their hearts were sealed over, and they do not understand.
