The opening of Makkah and the farewell sermon
In 8 AH he entered Makkah with ten thousand companions, and not a drop of blood was shed. To the people who had stoned him and hurt his family he said: “No blame is on you today. Go, you are free.”
The idols inside the Ka‘bah were broken, and he recited: “The truth has come and falsehood has vanished.”
The farewell sermon (10 AH)
Before more than a hundred thousand people at Arafah:
- Your blood, your property and your honour are sacred to one another.
- No Arab is better than a non-Arab, nor a non-Arab than an Arab — only by godliness.
- The interest and the blood feuds of the old days are abolished, beginning with my own family.
- Fear Allah in how you treat women.
- I leave among you two things: the Book of Allah and my sunnah.
Three months later he died. ‘Umar (ra) could not believe it; Abu Bakr (ra) stood and said: “Whoever worshipped Muhammad, let him know that Muhammad ﷺ has died. Whoever worships Allah — Allah is living and never dies.”
