The migration and the city that was built
After the night journey, people of Madinah accepted Islam; two pledges were taken at ‘Aqabah. Then came the permission to migrate.
The Prophet ﷺ set out with Abu Bakr (ra) and hid three days in the cave of Thawr. When Abu Bakr feared, he said:
لَا تَحْزَنْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَنَاLa tahzan inna Allaha ma‘anaDo not grieve; Allah is with us. (at-Tawbah 9:40)
In Madinah he did three things — the foundations of any society:
- A mosque — not only for prayer, but for learning and for the affairs of the city.
- Brotherhood — each migrant paired with a host, who shared home and wealth.
- The Charter of Madinah — a written agreement between Muslims, Jews and the other tribes: the safety of the city is everyone's duty.
Many call that charter the first written constitution in the world.
