Surah Al-Falaq (“The Dawn”) is the 113th surah of the Quran: a Makkan surah of 5 ayahs.
Background
With An-Nas it forms al-Mu‘awwidhatayn, the two surahs of seeking refuge, which the Prophet ﷺ recited for protection and before sleeping.
Main themes
- Refuge with the Lord of daybreak (1)
- From the evil of what He created (2)
- From the evil of darkness and of those who blow on knots (3–4)
- From the evil of an envier when he envies (5)
Virtue
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Have you not seen ayahs revealed tonight, the like of which has never been seen?” — meaning Al-Falaq and An-Nas (Muslim 814). Each night before sleep he recited Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas and wiped his body with his hands (Bukhari 5017).
