Surah Al-Balad (“The City”) is the 90th surah of the Quran: a Makkan surah of 20 ayahs.
Background
A Makkan surah opening with an oath by the city of Makkah, where the Prophet ﷺ lived.
Main themes
- Man created in toil (4)
- Did We not give him two eyes, a tongue and two lips? (8–9)
- The steep path: freeing a neck, feeding the orphan and the poor (11–16)
- Advising one another to patience and to mercy (17)
The opening ayahs
لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ ١
I swear by this city, Makkah -
وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ ٢
And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city -
وَوَالِدٍۢ وَمَا وَلَدَ ٣
And [by] the father and that which was born [of him],

প্রেক্ষাপট
মক্কায় অবতীর্ণ; রাসূলুল্লাহ ﷺ যে শহরে বাস করতেন, সেই মক্কা নগরীর শপথ দিয়ে শুরু।
