Surah Ash-Shams (“The Sun”) is the 91st surah of the Quran: a Makkan surah of 15 ayahs.
Background
A Makkan surah with the greatest number of oaths in the Quran, ending with the story of Thamud and the she-camel.
Main themes
- Oaths by the sun, moon, day, night, sky and earth
- The soul inspired with its wickedness and its righteousness (7–8)
- Successful is he who purifies it, failed is he who corrupts it (9–10)
- Thamud hamstrung the she-camel and were destroyed (11–15)

وَٱلشَّمْسِ وَضُحَىٰهَا ١
By the sun and its brightness
وَٱلْقَمَرِ إِذَا تَلَىٰهَا ٢
And [by] the moon when it follows it
وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا جَلَّىٰهَا ٣
And [by] the day when it displays it
