Surah Al-Fajr (“The Dawn”) is the 89th surah of the Quran: a Makkan surah of 30 ayahs.
Background
A Makkan surah. Many scholars explain “the ten nights” (2) as the first ten nights of Dhul-Hijjah.
Main themes
- ‘Ad of the lofty pillars, Thamud and Pharaoh (6–13)
- Honour and hardship are both tests (15–16)
- You do not honour the orphan or urge feeding the poor (17–18)
- O soul at peace, return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing (27–30)

وَٱلْفَجْرِ ١
By the dawn
وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍۢ ٢
And [by] ten nights
وَٱلشَّفْعِ وَٱلْوَتْرِ ٣
