Surah Al-Isra (“The Night Journey”) is the 17th surah of the Quran: a Makkan surah of 111 ayahs.
Background
Revealed in Makkah about a year before the Hijrah. It opens with the Isra’, the Prophet’s night journey from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa. It is also called Bani Isra’il.
Main themes
- The Isra’ and the blessed land of al-Aqsa (1)
- Kindness to parents, never saying “uff” to them (23–24)
- Commandments: give kin their due, do not waste, do not kill, give full measure (26–39)
- The Quran as healing and mercy for the believers (82)
Virtue
The Prophet ﷺ would not sleep until he had recited Bani Isra’il and Az-Zumar (Tirmidhi 2920).
The opening ayahs
سُبْحَٰنَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَسْرَىٰ بِعَبْدِهِۦ لَيْلًۭا مِّنَ ٱلْمَسْجِدِ ٱلْحَرَامِ إِلَى ٱلْمَسْجِدِ ٱلْأَقْصَا ٱلَّذِى بَٰرَكْنَا حَوْلَهُۥ لِنُرِيَهُۥ مِنْ ءَايَٰتِنَآ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْبَصِيرُ ١
Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.
وَءَاتَيْنَا مُوسَى ٱلْكِتَٰبَ وَجَعَلْنَٰهُ هُدًۭى لِّبَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ أَلَّا تَتَّخِذُوا۟ مِن دُونِى وَكِيلًۭا ٢
And We gave Moses the Scripture and made it a guidance for the Children of Israel that you not take other than Me as Disposer of affairs,
ذُرِّيَّةَ مَنْ حَمَلْنَا مَعَ نُوحٍ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ عَبْدًۭا شَكُورًۭا ٣
O descendants of those We carried [in the ship] with Noah. Indeed, he was a grateful servant.

প্রেক্ষাপট
হিজরতের প্রায় এক বছর আগে মক্কায় অবতীর্ণ। শুরুতে মসজিদুল হারাম থেকে মসজিদুল আকসা পর্যন্ত রাসূলুল্লাহ ﷺ-এর রাত্রিকালীন সফর ইসরার বর্ণনা। একে বনী ইসরাঈলও বলা হয়।
মূল বিষয়বস্তু
- ইসরা এবং বরকতময় আকসার ভূমি (১)
- বাবা-মায়ের প্রতি সদাচরণ, তাদের “উফ” পর্যন্ত না বলা (২৩–২৪)
- নির্দেশনা: আত্মীয়ের হক দাও, অপচয় কোরো না, হত্যা কোরো না, মাপে পূর্ণ দাও (২৬–৩৯)
- কুরআন মুমিনদের জন্য আরোগ্য ও রহমত (৮২)
ফজিলত
রাসূলুল্লাহ ﷺ বনী ইসরাঈল ও যুমার না পড়ে ঘুমাতেন না (তিরমিযী ২৯২০)।
