Surah Al-Bayyinah (“The Evidence”) is the 98th surah of the Quran: a Madinan surah of 8 ayahs.
Background
A Madinan surah. Allah commanded the Prophet ﷺ to recite it to Ubayy ibn Ka‘b, who wept on hearing that Allah had named him (Bukhari 4959).
Main themes
- A messenger from Allah reciting purified pages (2)
- They were commanded only to worship Allah sincerely, pray and give zakat (5)
- The best of creation are those who believe and do good (7)
- Allah is pleased with them and they with Him (8)
The opening ayahs
لَمْ يَكُنِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِنْ أَهْلِ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ وَٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ مُنفَكِّينَ حَتَّىٰ تَأْتِيَهُمُ ٱلْبَيِّنَةُ ١
Those who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists were not to be parted [from misbelief] until there came to them clear evidence -
رَسُولٌۭ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ يَتْلُوا۟ صُحُفًۭا مُّطَهَّرَةًۭ ٢
A Messenger from Allah, reciting purified scriptures
فِيهَا كُتُبٌۭ قَيِّمَةٌۭ ٣
Within which are correct writings.
