A powerful case for tawhid and against idolatry, with Ibrahim’s reasoning from the stars, moon and sun.

Surah Al-An'am (“The Cattle”) is the 6th surah of the Quran: a Makkan surah of 165 ayahs.

Background

A Makkan surah named after the cattle about which the idolaters made up superstitious rules (136–146). It argues for the oneness of Allah from creation itself.

Main themes

  • Allah as the Creator of the heavens, the earth, darkness and light
  • Ibrahim turning from the stars, moon and sun to their Creator (74–83)
  • The keys of the unseen are with Allah alone (59)
  • Ten commandments of the straight path (151–153)

The opening ayahs

[All] praise is [due] to Allah, who created the heavens and the earth and made the darkness and the light. Then those who disbelieve equate [others] with their Lord.
It is He who created you from clay and then decreed a term and a specified time [known] to Him; then [still] you are in dispute.
And He is Allah, [the only deity] in the heavens and the earth. He knows your secret and what you make public, and He knows that which you earn.
