Surah Al-Ahqaf (“The Dunes”) is the 46th surah of the Quran: a Makkan surah of 35 ayahs.
Background
A Makkan surah revealed around the time of the Prophet’s journey to Ta’if, after which a group of jinn listened to the Quran (29–32).
Main themes
- Kindness to parents; the prayer at forty years of age (15)
- Hud warning ‘Ad in the sand dunes (21–26)
- The jinn who listened in silence and went back as warners
- Be patient as the resolute messengers were patient (35)

حمٓ ١
Ha, Meem.
تَنزِيلُ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْحَكِيمِ ٢
The revelation of the Book is from Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
مَا خَلَقْنَا ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَآ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَأَجَلٍۢ مُّسَمًّۭى ۚ وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ عَمَّآ أُنذِرُوا۟ مُعْرِضُونَ ٣
We did not create the heavens and earth and what is between them except in truth and [for] a specified term. But those who disbelieve, from that of which they are warned, are turning away.
