Surah Al-Baqarah (“The Cow”) is the 2nd surah of the Quran: a Madinan surah of 286 ayahs.
Background
Revealed over several years after the Hijrah, it is the first long surah of Madinah. It takes its name from the cow Bani Isra’il were commanded to sacrifice (ayahs 67–73), and holds Ayat al-Kursi (255) and the longest ayah of the Quran, on recording debts (282).
Main themes
- Three kinds of people: believers, disbelievers and hypocrites
- The creation of Adam and humanity’s role on earth
- Lessons from the history of Bani Isra’il; the change of the qiblah to the Ka‘bah
- Laws of fasting, hajj, family, charity, and the prohibition of riba (interest)
Virtue
Satan flees from a house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited (Muslim 780). Whoever recites its last two ayahs at night, they suffice him (Bukhari 5009).
