Surah An-Najm (“The Star”) is the 53rd surah of the Quran: a Makkan surah of 62 ayahs.
Background

Main themes
- He does not speak from his own desire; it is revelation (3–4)
- The vision at the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary (13–18)
- Al-Lat, al-‘Uzza and Manat are mere names (19–23)
- Man will have only what he strove for (39)
The opening ayahs
By the star when it descends,
Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred,
Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination.
