When the Prophet was brought some pieces of fine Egyptian linen he gave me one and said, “Divide it into two; cut one of the pieces into a shirt and give the other to your wife for a veil.” Then when he turned away he said, “And order your wife to wear a garment below it and not show her figure.”

Jabir said ; When I came to the Prophet he was sitting with his hands round his knees wearing a cloak the fringe of which was over his feet.
Abu Dawud transmitted it.
‘A’isha said a black cloak was made for the Prophet and he put it on, but when he sweated in it and noticed the odour of the wool, he threw it away.
