Surah Al-Insan (“Man”) is the 76th surah of the Quran: a Madinan surah of 31 ayahs.
Background
Also called Ad-Dahr. The Prophet ﷺ recited it in the Fajr prayer on Fridays together with As-Sajdah (Bukhari 891).
Main themes
- Man was once nothing worth mentioning (1)
- We showed him the way, grateful or ungrateful (3)
- They feed the poor, the orphan and the captive for the love of Allah (8–9)
- The rewards of Paradise for their patience (12–22)
Virtue
The Prophet ﷺ recited Alif Lam Mim Tanzil and Hal ata ‘alal-insan in Fajr on Fridays (Bukhari 891).
The opening ayahs
هَلْ أَتَىٰ عَلَى ٱلْإِنسَٰنِ حِينٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلدَّهْرِ لَمْ يَكُن شَيْـًۭٔا مَّذْكُورًا ١
Has there [not] come upon man a period of time when he was not a thing [even] mentioned?
إِنَّا خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ مِن نُّطْفَةٍ أَمْشَاجٍۢ نَّبْتَلِيهِ فَجَعَلْنَٰهُ سَمِيعًۢا بَصِيرًا ٢
Indeed, We created man from a sperm-drop mixture that We may try him; and We made him hearing and seeing.
إِنَّا هَدَيْنَٰهُ ٱلسَّبِيلَ إِمَّا شَاكِرًۭا وَإِمَّا كَفُورًا ٣
Indeed, We guided him to the way, be he grateful or be he ungrateful.

রাসূলুল্লাহ ﷺ জুমার দিন ফজরে আলিফ লাম মীম তানযীল ও হাল আতা ‘আলাল ইনসান পড়তেন (বুখারী ৮৯১)।
