Surah Al-Jinn (“The Jinn”) is the 72nd surah of the Quran: a Makkan surah of 28 ayahs.
Background
A Makkan surah telling what the jinn said among themselves after hearing the Prophet ﷺ recite in the Fajr prayer (Bukhari 4921).
Main themes
- The jinn’s declaration of faith and rejection of shirk
- Among the jinn are righteous and otherwise (11)
- The masjids belong to Allah, so call on no one with Him (18)
- Only Allah knows the unseen, except what He reveals to a messenger (26–27)
The opening ayahs
قُلْ أُوحِىَ إِلَىَّ أَنَّهُ ٱسْتَمَعَ نَفَرٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْجِنِّ فَقَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا سَمِعْنَا قُرْءَانًا عَجَبًۭا ١
Say, [O Muhammad], "It has been revealed to me that a group of the jinn listened and said, 'Indeed, we have heard an amazing Qur'an.
يَهْدِىٓ إِلَى ٱلرُّشْدِ فَـَٔامَنَّا بِهِۦ ۖ وَلَن نُّشْرِكَ بِرَبِّنَآ أَحَدًۭا ٢
It guides to the right course, and we have believed in it. And we will never associate with our Lord anyone.
وَأَنَّهُۥ تَعَٰلَىٰ جَدُّ رَبِّنَا مَا ٱتَّخَذَ صَٰحِبَةًۭ وَلَا وَلَدًۭا ٣
And [it teaches] that exalted is the nobleness of our Lord; He has not taken a wife or a son
