Surah Ghafir (“The Forgiver”) is the 40th surah of the Quran: a Makkan surah of 85 ayahs.
Background
The first of the seven surahs beginning with Ha-Mim, revealed in Makkah. It is also called Al-Mu’min, after the believer who defended Musa at Pharaoh’s court (28–45).
Main themes
- Allah forgives sin and accepts repentance (3)
- The angels bearing the Throne pray for the believers (7–9)
- The believer of Pharaoh’s family: “Will you kill a man for saying ‘My Lord is Allah’?” (28)
- “Call on Me and I will answer you” (60)

حمٓ ١
Ha, Meem.
تَنزِيلُ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْعَلِيمِ ٢
The revelation of the Book is from Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Knowing.
غَافِرِ ٱلذَّنۢبِ وَقَابِلِ ٱلتَّوْبِ شَدِيدِ ٱلْعِقَابِ ذِى ٱلطَّوْلِ ۖ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۖ إِلَيْهِ ٱلْمَصِيرُ ٣
The forgiver of sin, acceptor of repentance, severe in punishment, owner of abundance. There is no deity except Him; to Him is the destination.

প্রেক্ষাপট
হা-মীম দিয়ে শুরু সাতটি সূরার প্রথমটি, মক্কায় অবতীর্ণ। ফিরআউনের দরবারে মূসা (আ.)-এর পক্ষে দাঁড়ানো মুমিন ব্যক্তির (২৮–৪৫) নামে একে আল-মু’মিনও বলা হয়।
